Whole school assessment (Y1 to Y6)
Throughout the year, children are assessed according to the objectives in the National Curriculum for the year group they are in. These objectives set out the ‘Age Related Expectation’ (ARE) for the year group they are in.
Depending on how many objectives they meet, children will be assessed each term as:
- Beginning: becoming familiar with the end of year expectations
- Emerging: secure in some of the end of year expectations
- Expected: secure in almost all or all of the end of year expectations
- Greater depth: secure in all of the end of year expectations AND able to use and apply their skills confidently
In school, beginning is recorded with the letter c, emerging with the letter b, expected with the letter a, greater depth as a+.
So, a child in Year 1 who has met the majority of the end of year expectations would be recorded as 1a at the end of the year, e.g. they are at the expected standard for Year 1
